Introducing Lauren, photographer for Rubies on Vanilla!
The Versatility of Coveralls
Experimenting with Colors & Textures
Combining Basics
As my co-blogger, it only made sense to utilize Lauren for our very first Wear Your Closet post. Among many other things, Lauren is a devoted wife, mom of two beautiful toddlers and an extremely talented artist with no intent on settling for the mediocre. Just go ahead and try and tell her she can't do something. She will prove you wrong. Because of her hectic lifestyle, Lauren was eager to have someone comb through her wardrobe with a fresh perspective and we both had a blast in the process.
As I started perusing her closet with her, she was open to “setting free” some items that were either worn out, bad impulse purchases or just plain didn’t fit. My number one rule when organizing a closet is “if it doesn’t fit, toss it”. Or at the very least, put it in the back of your closet out of view or pack it in your storage bin. Although it can be scary to toss out familiar clothes, in the long run you’re doing yourself a huge service. I don't know about you, but I don't have enough closet space to store clothes I'm not going to wear. Plus it's much easier to pull an outfit together when you're not distracted by these items.
We organized her clothes so that her daily staples were easily accessible and re-positioned her off season clothes to the back which will be pulled up front when the weather changes. I often find that just re-positioning clothes can inspire new outfit ideas.
Lauren’s clothes proved to be a lot of fun to work with because of all of the different textures and colors. You can sense her creative energy just by looking at her clothes. I loved pairing her Liberty work overalls with the structured green velvet jacket. She totally rocked that off kilter match and the outfit is very reflective of her personality. You can also see how we transitioned her summer jean shorts into a fall outfit with a simple black sweatshirt she had scooped up for $5. Add a few fun accessories and you're good to go.
The most fun outfit to style included the purple mexican themed dress from the NoDa store, Pura Vida Art. Lauren had performed her own alterations on the dress including removing the sleeves and shortening the hem. I paired it with the long sleeve shirt and tights to transition the dress from summer to fall. It looked super cute paired with those leopard print boots for a night out on the town!
I can’t wait to see what she comes up with now that she has a fresh start with her closet!

Take Aways:
- Closet organization can help solve the dreaded “I have nothing to wear” problem.
- Functional clothes, although basic, can be dressed up with different fabric textures and structure.
- Layering helps transition late summer clothes into fall and winter.
- Faux fur is always a fun purchase especially if you can find it second hand on the cheap!
- Pieces with history or a story not only help define your style but also serve as wonderful conversation starters.
